This chapter explores a notion of ‘self-conscious image’ to correspond with the notion of ‘self-conscious sound’ established in Chap. 2 . An equivalence is drawn between Graham’s spatial configuration of verse and the ideas of pictorial, physical and imaginative space underpinning British modernist 1940s/1950s painting associated with the St Ives School. Concerned primarily with Ben Nicholson’s geometrically constructed spaces, the chapter explores how, for both Nicholson and Graham, abstract formalism works to create a release into a new self-consciousness or imaginative world.

摘要

This chapter explores a notion of ‘self-conscious image’ to correspond with the notion of ‘self-conscious sound’ established in Chap. 2 . An equivalence is drawn between Graham’s spatial configuration of verse and the ideas of pictorial, physical and imaginative space underpinning British modernist 1940s/1950s painting associated with the St Ives School. Concerned primarily with Ben Nicholson’s geometrically constructed spaces, the chapter explores how, for both Nicholson and Graham, abstract formalism works to create a release into a new self-consciousness or imaginative world.
