Americans assume a natural affinity between business and conservatives particularly on issues such as taxation and regulation. There have been important differences, however, between business organizations, privately owned corporations, publicly traded corporations, and business billionaires in terms of what forms of political action to pursue. These differences turn on issues such as whether or not to have close links with the Republican Party and whether or not to promote conservative causes not related directly to their interests. Major publicly traded corporations have tended to act pragmatically in advancing their interests building relations with Democrats as well as Republicans. In contrast, both conservative and liberal billionaires have been more likely to advance favored political causes and candidates vociferously. Trump’s policies and undemocratic behavior drew sharp criticism from major corporations and a reduction in their links to Republicans. However, fear of retaliation has prompted these corporations to moderate their opposition to Trump and their support of liberal policies.
