Improper use of fertilizers in agricultural ecosystems has led to the decline in the quality of the soils. In this regard, scientists and farmers are looking for an organic alternative to chemical fertilizers. Biochar can be considered as an organic eco-friendly material and it has gained lots of attention as a conditioner for soil. Biochar (BCH) is believed to be involved in processes that impact the nutrient status in the soil. Due to its specific characteristics, BCH is able to affect the characteristics of the soil, which can directly and/or indirectly affect the accessibility of nutrients for plants. The effectiveness of biochar on each nutrient might vary based on the properties of biochar and soil, nutrient chemistry, biochar type, and application methods. Therefore, predicting the impact of BCH on the bioavailability of each nutrient is difficult. For gaining the maximum yield for biochar application and preventing the possible contaminations caused by biochar, selection and supplication of biochar must be specialized relative to different aspects of the application site, such as crop, soil properties, nutrient status of the soil, etc.
