Application of Biochar in the Removal of Contaminants from Soil and Water

Environmental contamination by different types of pollutants is increasing at a rapid pace worldwide. Environmental pollutants, above threshold levels, can mediate numerous environmental and health risks. This chapter explores the properties of biochar and its potential applications in remediating environmental pollutants from contaminated soil and water. Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced by pyrolyzing organic waste, has attracted numerous opportunities as an efficient and environmentally beneficial way to remediate environmental pollutants. This chapter reveals the environmental pollution by different types of pollutants. It examines the uses of biochar to eliminate different environmental pollutants including both organic and inorganic. Biochar’s exceptional adsorption abilities are a result of its distinct physicochemical characteristics. The chapter also covers the mechanisms of remediation/adsorption of environmental pollutants. Finally, the chapter highlights the factors affecting the effectiveness of biochar to remediate environmental pollutants. These factors include pyrolysis temperature, microbial interactions, pH, redox potential, and long-term biochar stability.
