Impacts of Forest Fires in Botswana: Implications for Forest Resources Conservation and Management

For many centuries, fires have been considered a key driver in the dynamics of vegetation and environmental changes. As a result, humans have lived with fires in fire-prone ecosystems, as they play an essential part in the maintenance of the environment. The literature highlights that the effects of fires on ecosystems are becoming a problem, with common views on their increasing occurrence, intensity, and losses. Globally, vast areas of forests are burned and destroyed annually, causing serious environmental and economic losses. This chapter reviews the literature on the impacts of forest fires in Botswana and possible management strategies. The review demonstrates that considerable losses of forest resources and biological diversity have resulted in environmental changes and the disruption of ecosystem services. In 2008, MODIS satellite sensors estimated that approximately 3.6 million hectares of land was burnt in the Ghanzi region, resulting in a loss of grazing and tourism resources estimated at $239,000. However, some studies have demonstrated that fire may play a critical role in shaping the evolution of land plants and, as such, may be a major driver of trait innovations among terrestrial plants. The magnitude of vegetation losses to fire fluctuates greatly among plant communities and species. Some species with flammable leaves, shoots, and litter are more susceptible to fire than others. Fire policies and management protocols in Botswana should promote the adoption and scale up of effective technologies utilized in the management of forest fires. This will assist in the management and prevention of mega fires in the country.
