This chapter describes the relationship between comics and satire and characterises underground comix as a subversive phenomenon. First, it briefly discusses the features and evolution of the comics medium and its language, from its early appearance and success as satirical inserts in Sunday newspaper supplements until the crisis of the 1950s and the creation of the so-called Comics Code Authority, i.e., a censorship body that started regulating the content and distribution of comics from 1954 Hadju (2008). This event paved the way to the birth of underground comix, as a reaction against censorship as well as against ‘square world’ society that, between the 1960s and 1970s, the counterculture movement was trying to undermine. While presenting the main characteristics of underground comix, this chapter discusses how their history is deeply ingrained in the climate of political and cultural revolution of those years and, at the same time, how they managed to renovate the comics medium through their exuberant and brazen works.
