Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly advanced, increasingly infiltrating human activities once deemed exclusively human. The field of industrial design, characterized by creativity and technical skill, now encounters AI's potential. Despite AI not posing a current threat to industrial design professionals, skepticism towards its use as a design tool arises. This study investigates whether there exists a bias against AI-generated industrial designs, like biases observed in AI-generated architecture and art. An online survey was conducted, presenting photographs of industrial designs crafted by both AI and humans, randomly labeled to disguise their origin. This was answered by 50 students, evenly split between newcomers and those nearing graduation in industrial design, participated. The survey aimed to assess if designs labeled as AI-generated were rated differently than those labeled as human-created. Preliminary findings indicate a bias exists, with AI-labeled designs receiving lower evaluations. This bias also appeared to shift with participants’ expertise, suggesting an evolving perception of AI's role in industrial design based on experience. These insights could inform educators and professionals in industrial design, highlighting the need for further exploration into AI's educational and practical applications in the field.
