This article examines the ergonomic considerations in the design of walker handles. The analysis includes the design of handles for traditional walkers without wheels, two-wheeled, three-wheeled, 4-wheeled (rollators), and robotic walkers. The elderly rely on walkers for mobility outside their residences, necessitating their use for an extended duration. Using walkers significantly enhances the elderly's communication, social life, independence, and, most importantly, health. The ergonomics of walker handles have been meticulously enhanced by considering comfort, functionality, and aesthetics. Functionally, the handles are designed to guide the walker forward without requiring excessive manoeuvrability. Aesthetically, the design aims for neutrality to create a universal appeal suitable for adult users. Regarding the comfort aspect, the ergonomic characteristics of the hand and the grip of the handles have been considered. The ergonomic design of the handles is founded on three crucial principles: diameter, length, and grip direction. For instance, the diameter of the handles is carefully chosen to allow for a comfortable grip without straining the hand. The handles are designed to be longer than the palm's width to prevent blood flow and nerve function damage, causing numbness, discomfort, and fatigue. The grip direction is aligned with the hand and wrist anatomy to ensure a natural and comfortable grip. These principles are critical aspects of the design process. The new handle design incorporates specialised channels to improve finger ergonomics and a thumb rest feature, developed by creating sketches and clay prototypes of popular models. The selection of materials was a meticulous process, ensuring optimal surface definition for the handles, guaranteeing their quality and safety.
