Exploring the Dynamics of Lake Konarı (Safranbolu): A Study on an Undiscovered Natural Wonder

This study delves into Konarı Lake, one of the natural wonders yet to be discovered in academic and touristic terms, in Safranbolu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, employing water chemistry, isotopic analysis, and geophysical measurements alongside field studies. One lake, three springs, two wells, and one river measurement point in the study area were mapped. Electrical conductivity (EC) and pH values of groundwater range between 100 and 1422 μS/cm and 5.13–7.91 in rainy period and 372–1031 μS/cm and 6.54–7.78 in dry period, respectively. Due to the Piper diagram, water was mostly in the Ca-HCO3 facies, but the KK-5 water was in the CaSO4 facies, probably due to the oxidation of sulfur minerals at depth. Oxygen-18-Deuterium and Tritium isotopes results show that the waters are of meteoric origin and the waters of Konarı Lake and its surroundings are a “mixture of semi-modern and current recharge”. The waters were compared with the Turkish Water Regulation for Human Consumption and WHO Standards for drinking water. It was determined that the waters exceeded B, As, Se, and Hg standards, and some also exceeded the standards for Al, Mn, Cd, and NH4. It is thought that the source of these pollutions may be the possible presence of sulfur mineral deposits in the region, the natural leaching of rocks, and the unconscious use of fertilisers and pesticides during agricultural activities. It was determined as a result that Konarı Lake, lacking surface flow recharging, might be recharged by limestone aquifers of different origins with a karstic structure located in the north/northeast of the lake, recharged by pressurised aquifer.
