Geotectonic Evolution of the Island of Cyprus

The island of Cyprus crops out on the Misis-Kyrenia and the Troodos tectonic slices within the Alpine-Himaleyan mountain belt between the African and Eurasian plates. Tertiary sediments are overlying the Cyprus Accretionary Prism material formed by subduction of the post-Cretaceous Neotethis oceanic crust beneath the continental Taurus micro-plate that broke apart from the Gondwana Continent. The Mesozoic outcrops around the Troodos massif are pelagic autochthonous sediments safeguarded from deformation by an underlying rigid basement. However, Mesozoic deposits in the Beşparmak slice are heavily fractured and deformed blocks within the subduction complex that formed these mountains. As a result of the rise of the geotectonic slices in the Miocene, the isles of Trodos and Beşparmak formed. Continuation of the uplifting merged the two isles to form the island of Cyprus. Transgression during the Pliocene–Pleistocene caused the invasion of the depression between Troodos and Kyrenia Range by a shallow sea for a while, but soon after the regression of the sea merged the two isles into a single island again. The island of Cyprus is neither a break from Anatolia nor has it sunk to the bottom of the sea three times, contrary to what is known. The Cyprus island occurrence is a geotectonic uplift from the ocean floor to the water surface.
