C. R. Rao: A Legacy of Pioneering Contributions in Statistics and Data Science

Professor C. R. Rao, a towering figure in statistics, passed away at the age of 102. His illustrious career culminated in receiving the highest honor in statistics, an $80,000 award from the International Statistical Institute, presented during the 64th World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Canada, from July 16 to 20, 2023. This article explores his extensive contributions to statistics and data science, as well as the lifestyle that enabled him to live a long, healthy, happy, and productive life. We believe his lifestyle can inspire our global colleagues and friends to achieve their own extraordinary goals. Known affectionately as CR at Penn State University from 1988 to 2010, this article delves into his academic and research endeavors, contributions to modern statistics and data science, early life and qualifications, professional roles in India and the USA, memorable moments from his life, and the celebrations of his birth centenary.
