David Storey made a profound and long-lasting contribution towards greater understanding of small businesses and entrepreneurship. He viewed himself as an economist. In my opinion, David was a closet economic geographer throughout his career (Curran and Storey, Small Firms in Urban and Rural Locations, London, 1993; Storey, 1982, 1984a, b, 1985; Reynolds et al., Regional Studies 28:443–456, 1994; Fritsch et al., 2014; editorship of several issues of the journal Regional Studies) who recognized the importance of place where entrepreneurial activities are undertaken.
