OCT and Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MSMultiple Sclerosis (MS)) is a chronic, currently incurable neurologic disease, which frequently affects the visual system. Optical coherence tomography (OCTOptical Coherence Tomography (OCT)) facilitates the viewing of retinal neurons and axons in vivo, and this has enabled researchers and clinicians to better characterise neurodegenerationNeurodegeneration and inflammationInflammation in MSMultiple Sclerosis (MS). In this updated review, we discuss the effects of MSMultiple Sclerosis (MS) onOptic Neuritis (ON) the retinal layers and complexes, and emphasise the importance of optic neuritis (ONOptic Neuritis (ON)) as a confounding variable; the retinal ganglion cells and their axons are particularly vulnerable to damage in patients with MSMultiple Sclerosis (MS), a process that is exacerbated by ONOptic Neuritis (ON). We also discuss the relationships between OCTOptical Coherence Tomography (OCT) parameters and other outcome measures such as clinical rating scales, magnetic resonance imaging (MRIMagnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)), electrophysiology, and blood-based biomarkersBiomarker that are increasingly used in clinical care and trials in MSMultiple Sclerosis (MS). Finally, we discuss the evidence regarding OCTOptical Coherence Tomography (OCT) findings and treatment response, and the use of OCTOptical Coherence Tomography (OCT) as an outcome measure in MSMultiple Sclerosis (MS) clinical trials.
