Using Barometric Pressure Sensors in Soft Robots

This paper presents a detailed methodology for calibrating barometric pressure sensors embedded in soft robots, which is crucial for ensuring accurate pressure measurement and effective control. Soft robots, with their flexible and adaptive structures, require precise internal pressure monitoring to maintain performance and functionality. We outline a comprehensive calibration process that includes the initial setup of the sensor within the soft structure, baseline measurement under unpressurised conditions, and incremental application of known pressures using a calibrated source. Data from these controlled pressure steps are recorded and used to create a calibration curve through linear regression, enabling accurate pressure readings. The calibration process is validated through additional pressure applications, ensuring minimal error and high reliability. Our methodology addresses sensor stability, environmental factors, and hysteresis, providing a robust framework for integrating barometric pressure sensors in soft robotic applications. This calibration technique ensures that the soft robot’s internal pressure is accurately monitored, enhancing operational efficiency and control precision.
