As automation in text generation emerges on the business level, research interest increases concerning the use of language in organizations and its impact on formalized procedures. Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) as a descriptive theory for text structuring is established to make explicit structural patterns and dependencies that can well be used for organizing and understanding business processes. Developed for discourse analysis and applied in a variety of domains, there is a good deal of conceptual overlap between RST and business process modeling, in particular when plain language forms the ground for modeling. Accordingly, RST may offer some theoretical backing that historically has been missing from business process modeling, and Business Process Management (BPM) could benefit from an analytical view underlying language communication behavior of involved actors. As demonstrated on existing findings, language-based knowledge articulation and representation related to RST could be further integrated into business process modeling and organizational design. This paper reports promising overlaps between RST and subject-oriented process modeling once human language comes into play. The results lay ground for modeling constructs facilitating human-oriented design of business processes.
