Production Assessment of Indigenous Microalgae Biomass Using Treated Wastewater as Growth Culture Medium

The present study is focused on exploring the feasibility of microalgae cultivation using a mixture of secondary treated domestic wastewater with modified-BG11 (combined medium 1:1 ratio) as culture medium. For this purpose, the used species are indigenous green microalgae consortium isolated from freshwater sample of a northeast Algerian water source. The growth microalgae was followed using closed photobioreactor under fixed operating conditions, as temperature, gas flowrate and light intensity. Final biomass production for microalgae consortium grown in modified-BG11 medium and combined medium was 0.54 and 1.48 g/L respectively with a corresponding total lipid content of 20.94 and 58.45% dw. These results show that the invested indigenous microalgae adapts perfectly to the medium composed of modified-BG11 and wastewater for rapid growth, good biomass productivity and considerable lipid content for biodiesel production. However, it clearly appears that the secondary treated domestic wastewater contains nutrients necessary for the growth of the microalgae species contained in the consortium and which are in harmony with their physiological conditions.
