Architecture can be described based on the function, construction materials and traditional knowledge specific and distinctive to its location. It is ethnic to a specific time and place and integrates the skills and proficiency of local builders. The focus of this paper is to analyze traditional construction materials and techniques with a case study of a 350 year-old “Hirebettu House”, which is a traditional home of the bunt community of coastal Karnataka. These houses have developed over generations with locally available building materials, craftsmanship and responses to climatic conditions. For instance, some examples of such types of houses are still found in Hirebettu Grama. These traditional houses are provided with various passive solar techniques, including natural cooling systems, which are more comfortable than contemporary buildings in today’s context. Field data are gathered by a range of methods, such as history, observation, documentation, and simulation. The aim of this research paper is to analyze the traditional construction materials and techniques that help to achieve adequate cooling comfort for users in coastal regions with hot and humid climatic conditions. It also explores how these techniques can be interpreted in today’s context so that they can be used effectively in future residential designs.
