In this chapter, we present Euler systems, a concept due to Kolyvagin (Euler systems, Birkhäuser, Boston, 1990) and developed by Rubin (Euler Systems, Princeton Univ. Press, Princeton, 2000). The Euler systems arising from Heegner points that we consider do not entirely fit into the elegant framework of an Euler system defined by Rubin in (Euler Systems, Chapter 2, Princeton Univ. Press, Princeton, 2000). For this reason, we give a more general definition of an Euler system in Sect. 6.1.
