This book attempts to explain the nexus between inclusive finance and legal pluralism. We use the informal credit markets in Ethiopia and South Africa to explore how legal pluralism enhances inclusive finance. How we understand and apply law determines the nature and manner of relations and transactions in society. The scope and scale of the informal economy are affected in many ways by law. This book argues that legal pluralism allows local actors to use their creativity and innovation to solve financial exclusion. The more inclusive the legal system is, the more inclusive the economic system will be. This introductory chapter briefly explains the book and the perspective chapters.
