The Brazilian Amazon draws the attention of the international community for its extensive area composed of the most varied animal, plant and mineral species and particularly its people. This region is a multicultural universe where the people who live there have struggled throughout history, in the face of the paradoxical conflict between the preservation of local nature in a virgin state and the guidelines that global evolution imposes as the foundation of development, which arouses interest in its exploitation, generating an uncontrolled migratory flow and disorderly use of the environment. In this context, Geographical Indications (GIs) in the Amazon region began to deserve special attention in the form of public policies aimed at protecting traditional know-how, as well as the protection of those who effectively preserve culture and history and often earn less in the economic chain, that is, the producers. With this study, we demonstrated how the state of Pará, one of the largest Brazilian federative entities, located in the Amazon, uses Geographical Indications as a possibility to preserve resources and knowledge with the valorization of products of origin.
