One review of Pavane described it as a love affair with Corfe Castle, and indeed the Castle, as well as the surrounding landscape of the Isle of Purbeck along with Dorset as a whole, plays an essential role in the work. And not just Pavane, Roberts’s other work would return again and again to the same landscape. The history buried in the ground of Dorset, from the ruins of ancient monuments to the bodies returned to the land, is fundamental to any understanding of the belief structure of Pavane. This chapter examines the role of the landscape in the shaping of character, the shaping of beliefs, and hence the shaping of events.
