Driving Innovations: Trends, Prospects and Challenges of Implementing Disruptive Educational Technologies Within HEIs

As technological and social innovations usher in Industry 4.0, within educational settings a reform in higher education is essential to drive transformations in the forms and methods of teaching [1]. Thus, academic driven innovations are essential, as apart from enhancing both the quality and the outcome of the learning process, they will provide students the ability to learn and interact with innovative technology within their cognitive development [2]. To this end the use of Educational Technologies (EdTech) has become central to the adoption of innovation in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), affecting all elements of the learners’ experience [3]. This chapter will seek to provide implementation detail and governance methodology employed to launch a disruptive EdTech framework within a HEI located in the small island state of Malta. The framework specifically aims to implement and enhance emerging EdTech to meet evolving student expectations, support their learning needs through a transformed hybrid infrastructure, and establish a centralized EdTech knowledge hub. Furthermore, the chapter seeks to guide and define the parameters that lead to identification of viable EdTech initiatives, the collaborative requirements, the general resources expectations, and the key stages of adoption of chosen EdTech solutions within a HEI. The EdTech framework is anchored in the premise of making existing organizational structures more flexible, and fostering their ability to innovate, react and respond. Within this model, each unique EdTech adoption is introduced and managed through a project-based approach and analysed through the proposal of an EdTech Adoption Model (EDAM). The process is detailed and exemplified within the case study analysed through this chapter will elucidates the introduction, adoption and acceleration lifecycle of eXtended Reality (XR) in higher education.
