An Insider Approach to Navigating Challenges in Modern Qur’anic Writings: A Critique of Michael Cook’s the Koran: A Very Short Introduction
摘要
This paper provides an in-depth analysis of Michael Cook’s The Koran: A Very Short Introduction. Although this text addresses a range of topics, it neglects certain spiritual, ethical and philosophical elements, possibly owing to its concision. The aim of this paper is to fill in these gaps and thus pave the way towards a fuller understanding of the Qur’ān. The paper also provides historical context and literary critiques missing from Cook’s analysis. By highlighting essential elements of Qur’ānic understanding, including recitation, oral traditions, and the myriad interpretative approaches utilised by Muslim scholars, it widens the scope of Qur’ānic interpretations and their modern applications. Towards the end, the paper summarises how Cook’s work and similar introductory texts tend to fall short, namely, by failing to show how the Qur’ān is adaptable to changing times. By adopting an insider approach, the paper aims to enrich the Qur’ānic milieu by supplementing Cook’s analysis.
