Etymologically, kafa’ah refers to appropriateness or equality. In Islam, marriage is considered “ibadah.” Numerous studies explore the criteria for selecting a life partner within the Muslim community, predominantly focusing on four key aspects derived from Islamic teachings: religious commitment, physical attractiveness, material possessions, and familial lineage. However, investigations into alternative criteria remain limited. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to investigate the practice of choosing a life partner based on beauty and health criteria among Muslim community in Malaysia. Employing a descriptive survey methodology entrenched in quantitative research, this study utilizes an online questionnaire-based method for data collection. As a result of the pilot study, reliability analysis revealed a Cronbach's alpha score of 0.81, suggesting a high level of consistency within the study. The questionnaire was distributed online among residents across Malaysian states, gathering responses from 381 individuals’ assembly specific inclusion criteria: Muslim, aged between 18 and 51 years, with educational attainment at least equivalent to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). Data analysis, which was performed using Statistical Package for Social Science Version (SPSS 28.0), employed descriptive statistics such as percentages, frequencies, mean scores, and standard deviations. The results showed that respondents valued beauty and health characteristics in partner selection, as reflected by consistently high mean values ranging from 3.85 to 4.76 across relevant categories. However, respondents did not prioritize having a pleasing appearance in the eyes of others when selecting a partner. As a comprehensive religion, Islam provides guidance for various matters including when it comes to finding a mate. In building a marriage bond that is harmonious and blessed by God, to follow the guidance of Shariah and prophetic advice that is, prospective husbands are encouraged to prioritize women who are pious (religious) and can give birth to offspring in addition to having other special characteristics.
