Power utility companies choose underground cables as an alternative to overhead lines due to the rapid urbanization and scarcity of land. The majority of the faults in underground cable systems are permanent in nature and can be of any fault type. It is very important for the power utility companies to identify these faults at the earliest for maintaining continuity of the power supply, reliability, reducing the outage time and quicker restoration. There are many methods for detecting the fault in the underground cable. Most of the electrical utility companies use thumper method to detect the fault location, this method gives the approximate location of the fault and in this method repetitive high voltage pulses are applied till the fault location is identified. Because of this application of pulses, the weak points in the cable insulation can cause breakdown. In the present work a low-cost prototype model is developed to detect the fault in the underground cable. This can be operated in any type of environmental conditions and fault detection is done based on the magnetic field intensity. Based on the increase or decrease in the magnetic field intensity instead of uniform field, the type of fault can be determined. In addition to fault detection, an option for sending an SMS alert to the Utility operator is provided in this Prototype model.

摘要
