Review of the Need for Andragogical Inclusion in Higher Education

With the day-to-day evolution of education in terms of teaching and learning and the inclusion of technology in higher education, it becomes natural to question the effectiveness of the traditional pedagogical techniques in higher education in the contemporary era. Today’s generation being the digital natives, it becomes difficult for the conventional pedagogies to be sufficient to cater to the needs of their expectations in learning. This paper intends to review the need for andragogical approach in adult education which is learner centric, tracing its origin and comparison with pedagogical techniques that are teacher directed. It spells out the technicalities of pedagogy as well as andragogy with respect to teaching and highlights the importance of the paradigm shift from pedagogy to andragogy in adult education which is the need of the hour. Having reviewed the existing literature pertaining to this context, this study proves that the switching over from pedagogy and andragogy will bring in better and practical result amidst the adult learners and increase the effectiveness of learning as it will facilitate independent as well as lifelong learning.
