This chapter explores how Indigenous communities of origin fare in the frameworks of protection for Scientific and Technical Indigenous Knowledge (STIK) otherwise known as ‘traditional knowledge’ in distinction to ‘Indigenous cultural expressions’. STIK encompasses all aspects of the biological, medical, chemical, technological, natural and physical knowledge accumulated as Indigenous Africans responded and interacted with their environment including their genetic resources (plants and animals) and knowledge associated with the use and benefits of genetic resources that is described as associated scientific and technical knowledge (aSTIK).
