In this contribution, the authors intend to bring into the spotlight the process of digitalisation of Der Nordschleswiger, the newspaper of the German minority in Denmark (a community of c. 15,000 people). Continuously decreasing number of subscriptions to the print edition, in combination with generally changing habits of media consumption, resulted in the newspaper steadily losing its ability as a medium to bring its target community together. In response to this, it was decided to turn Der Nordschleswiger in February 2021 into an online newspaper with a very limited print presence (a fortnightly selection of previously online published texts without any original content). On the one hand, this strategic change was preceded by a thorough deliberative process within the institutions of the German minority, whilst on the other it was accompanied by consultations with the readers (e.g. through a survey), direct technical assistance offered to those less digitally savvy, and a complex information campaign explaining the change in relation to technological aspects and the role of Der Nordschleswiger for the target community. The present chapter reconstructs and interprets this complex network of activities. Empirically it is based primarily on the relevant publicly available content produced by the newspaper, as well as a survey and a set of reports provided to the authors by its journalists. This results in an analysis offering an insight into a unique situation of a very intense communication between a medium and its target community, highlighting—whilst at the same time also nuancing—the proximity between minority language media and their audiences. In that sense, the chapter can also function as a source of a model potentially of interest for other minority language newspapers considering both a digital switch and ways of involving their target communities within such a process.

摘要
