Since the beginning of the nineteenth century many well known scientists among them Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert, Simèon Denis Poisson, George Gabriel Stokes, Lord Rayleigh, Lord Kelvin, Bernhard Riemann, William John Macquorn Rankine and Pierre Henri Hugoniot worked on the theory of sound, in particular the propagation of sound waves of finite amplitude. In this view it is interesting to comprehend the evolution of the theory of discontinuous surfaces inSalas, M.D. a flow field [1]. We address in this chapter strong, weak and contact discontinuities.
