The boundary layer concept of Ludwig Prandtl was a breakthrough in the understanding of flow behavior. The boundary layer equations can be derived from the Navier-Stokes equations by physical estimations of the development of the boundary layer as well as the magnitude of the corresponding fluid dynamic variables.
