Effects of Insurgency on Food Production in Nigeria: Case Study of Borno State
摘要
Insurgency is a major problem disturbing food security in Nigeria, as a huge portion of the agricultural produce consumed in Nigeria like yams, tomatoes, pepper, groundnut, onions, cattle, and so on come majorly from the northern part of the country. The northeast, west, and central parts are all affected by insurgency. The research is in tandem with the SDG Goals 2 (zero hunger), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions). Borno State being the most affected by insurgency was chosen as a case study having a population of over six million people according to 2016 census. The major stakeholders, farmers and traders, were interviewed and data collected with aid of well-structured questionnaires administered in the 27 LGA of the state. Multistage stage random sampling was adopted and inferential analysis was done using SPSS 21 software. Results revealed that the insurgency has impacted negatively on agricultural activities as most of the farmlands have been lost, crops and livestock destroyed, and most of the indigenes have been forced to relocate for their safety. Eradicating insurgency will help in achieving the aforementioned SDG goals and guarantying food security in Nigeria.
