Preservation of the Architectural Buildings from Pathologies Analysis and Diagnosis of the Restoration of the Facade of Bastion 23 Casbah Algeria

The urban configuration of the Casbah of Algiers is exceptionally well-preserved, maintaining its original and authentic character, in contrast to the lower Casbah, which has been impacted by the encroachment of the European city. The Palais des Raïs, a crucial historical monument in Algiers, serves as a tangible witness to the Casbah’s extension toward the sea until the nineteenth century. Historical monument restoration involves adherence to established principles and recommendations. This includes a focus on facade coatings, a common task in restoration sites, necessitating the study of their composition to ensure material compatibility and optimal performance. The use of hydraulic binder-based mortars in restoration has been identified as a cause of severe pathologies and aesthetic alterations in historical monuments. Notably, the Raïs palace stands as one of the last physical witnesses to the Ottoman era. Bastion 23, integral to the Medina of Algiers’ extension to the sea in its time, is a significant historical monument. However, due to various upheavals and restructuring during the French period, it remains detached and isolated from its traditional environment. Initially facing calls for erasure, subsequent periods witnessed efforts to reclaim and, ultimately, restore and revive the Bastion. Despite frequent facelift operations, the facades of the Palais des Raïs have exhibited signs of fatigue over time. Addressing this requires the formulation of a comprehensive “renovation” specification before commencing restoration work. The alterable nature of our built heritage, coupled with climatic and human factors, has brought the Casbah of Algiers to a critical state, necessitating strategic restoration operations for its protection and conservation. The manifestation of disorders and disasters at the building level highlights the urgency of preventing further deterioration. To achieve this, a list of possible pathologies has been established, focusing on life-table and measurable pathologies related to the typologies and materials specific to the case study. Emphasizing facade issues such as cracks and coating disorders, the study centers on Bastion 23 in the Casbah of Algiers, proposing protective approaches against prevalent pathologies in the region and suggesting coatings for various damaged parts of the palace.
