The primary objective of this paper is to clarify the factors contributing to the loss, destruction, and damage of Syrian cultural heritage throughout the 12-year duration of the Syrian crisis. Additionally, it seeks to assess the extent of the risks to which cultural heritage sites in Syria have been exposed. To achieve these goals, the risk exposure of these sites was categorized based on two criteria. The first criterion considers the period during which cultural heritage sites were damaged. The second criterion takes into account the geopolitical importance of these sites. The situation will then be illustrated in more detail through a specific case study from a high-risk area, i.e., Aleppo. The case study focuses on three key sites in Aleppo: the citadel, the Umayyad Mosque, and the covered market.
