Transfeminism, a politics that combats sexism and transphobia as mutually reinforcing structures of oppression, is increasingly present within Puerto Rican society. The murder of Alexa Luciano Negrón in February of 2020 was an important catalyst for the articulation of a coalitional transfeminist politics because people saw her case as emblematic of the compounding oppressions that trans women face. This chapter begins with a genealogy of global transfeminism and then describes the components of Alexa’s murder that made her a flashpoint for transfeminist consciousness raising, activism, and artistic expressions. It concludes by examining the limitations of hate crime legislation for preventing transfemicides like Alexa’s.
