This chapter presents the Reference Ontology of Trust (ROT), a UFO-based ontology, specified in OntoUML (Guizzardi, 2005; Guizzardi, Fonseca, Almeida, et al., 2021), that formally characterizes the concept of trust, clarifies the relation between trust and risk, and represents how risk emerges from trust relations (Amaral, Sales, and Guizzardi, 2021b; 2022; Amaral, Sales, Guizzardi, and Porello, 2019). ROT also provides a deep account of the different factors that can influence trust, such as mental biases, trustworthy behavior indications provided by the trustee and pieces of evidence that suggest a trustee should be trusted.
