Semiotics as a Teaching Aid in the Course of Engineering Graphics
摘要
Engineers ought to be trained in developing spatially related problem-solving abilities to give views of an object and to create it’s a mental image for application. One of the basic courses for engineering and technology students is the design language of Engineering Graphics (EG). Development of EG is influenced (besides other theories) by semiotics - the theory of signs and symbols and, to some degree, also the theory of meaning-making. Engineering students with different cultural and language backgrounds create the meaning and sign (Engineering Drawing) of the functionality of an object in different ways. We present some specific features of this process in terms of semiotics, for example considering Western and Eastern cultures, the awareness of which could smooth the conflicts, arising from different notions and clarity different viewpoints among students during the course of EG.
