A Quadratrix Trammel
摘要
Hippias of Ellis (fifth century bc) is credited with inventing/discovering the quadratrix, a curve he used to solve one of the three famous impossibility constructions of Euclidean geometry, and which also solves a second as well. How did he do this? Merely by mind experiment? And how might we fashion a physical trammel using easily available material so as to generate a quadratrix curve?
