The Common Swift (Apus apus) has adapted over the centuries to human habitations and structures. They breed in the northern hemisphere but migrate to, and winter in, sub-Saharan Africa. Owing to modern architectural techniques and restorations of old buildings, Common Swifts are disadvantaged in that cracks and crevices that existed are obliterated preventing them from breeding in urban areas. Hence, nest-box programs were initiated in order to try and allow the species to continue to coexist with humans. Such a program has also been initiated in Israel and is coupled with environmental education in the primary and middle schools. Common Swift breeding biology has not been previously studied in Israel and CCTV cameras installed in eight of the nest-chambers allowed us to follow the 2020 breeding season. We found that on average, the first bird to visit a chamber was on 13th March (3 Feb–18 Apr), the first egg of the clutch laid on sixth April (16 Mar–28 Apr), and nestlings fledge 4th June; clutch size is 2.5 eggs (±0.55; 2–3); incubation starts with the laying of the second egg and hatching is asynchronous. Fledging success was 73%. Our project underlines the usefulness of human intervention in urban areas to facilitate the continued sustenance of wildlife in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
