Urban bird assemblages indicate environmental quality and are often included in biomonitoring programmes. Although sensitivity towards environmental conditions determines the indicator value of a bird species, assemblage features such as species richness and abundance are also helpful in deducing overall habitat quality. In the background of urban structures and anthropogenic activities, the living spaces for birds appear mostly as fragmented patches separated by barriers to connectivity. Adaptation to such a heterogeneous environment with human dominance is a key factor determining the diversity of the birds in both terrestrial and freshwater habitats of urban areas. The role of the birds as ecosystem service providers constitutes the foundation for the concern and conservation of urban birds. In view of these propositions, species diversity and resource utilization patterns emphasizing guilds and networks were deduced through observation of the birds of Kolkata and selected urban areas of West Bengal, India. An ecological network of bird and habitat features in urban areas has been explored here as a pioneering effort to understand the relative importance of the differing habitat elements for conservation. Surveys of the selected spaces and continued monitoring of the avifauna enabled assessment of the species richness of the relevant areas along with association to particular resources. Using this information on patterns of resource utilization, a guild structure and a network could be built that examined key links of the birds with resources available in the urban spaces. In all instances, apart from trees, and urban structures, buildings and poles appeared to be prominent features of importance birds. Among their multiple uses, habitat structures facilitated both foraging and breeding by birds. Information obtained on species diversity and linkages with resource elements can be used to explore further for the conservation of birds in urban landscapes. Exploration into network structure can provide crucial points to explore for the sustenance of the bird assemblages in the urban areas of West Bengal, India and similar places.
