Teaching Advocacy: Cultivating a Voice for Change
摘要
Health advocacy has been ingrained in family medicine since its inception. It plays a pivotal role in our specialty, influencing individual patient care, policy, nonmedical drivers of health, and health equity by impacting systems and communities. Family physicians are an integral part of the healthcare system and are uniquely positioned to serve as public advocates, contribute to system transformation, and improve health on a broader scale. Recognition of the need for residents to be socially responsible has increased awareness of the value of teaching health advocacy in graduate medical education (GME). This chapter reviews potential barriers and facilitators to teaching health advocacy and offers educational frameworks for health advocacy curriculum design. Systematic reviews of published health advocacy curricula are summarized. Curricular areas of focus and educational categories with goals and objectives are proposed. Assessment and evaluation approaches for learners and curricula are outlined.
