As the next step in the journey of life-long learning of Family Medicine Physicians after medical school, residencies are tasked with teaching learners to adapt the book learning, and memorization strategies from higher education to now expand to practical skills and developing the art of medicine. Each stakeholder i.e. faculty, residents, program directors, and patients, in these programs aims to produce effective, knowledgeable, and competent graduates who will do no harm. While medical education has historically produced phenomenal physicians, it is also renowned for toxic practices that interfere with learners’ psychological safety, impeding them from receiving the full extent of growth achievable. In the same spirit of life-long learning that enables physicians to adjust their practice with updated recommendations and research, so must they continue to update educational practices. This chapter discusses concepts imperative to developing an environment ideal for continued education and growth, including psychological safety, developing trusting relationships, giving and receiving feedback, addressing and combating implicit biases, effective and equitable teaching strategies, and, finally, remediation of struggling learners.
