Introduction and Overview

The interest in using Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) and Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs), a combination of FRP with thin metal sheets, has increased significantly in numerous domains over the last decades [1]. Especially for aircraft manufacturers, these materials are a topic of great importance given their advantages compared to the classically used aircraft material aluminum. For the Airbus A380, a large number of parts like wings, tail part, fuselage, and more are made of FML (GLAss REinforced laminate (GLARE)) or FRPs (see Fig. 1.1). The advantages provided by these materials are for example the weight-saving potential, improved fatigue behavior and damage tolerances, the inherent resistance to corrosion, and good fire resistance [2–4].
