This chapter surveys the critical realist (CR) philosophy developed by Roy Bhaskar. It addresses its ontology, epistemology, and methodology, comparing it with positivism. It discusses this philosophy’s central concepts of causality and mechanism. CR’s relationships with hermeneutics and interpretivism are examined, and the issue of structure and agency is discussed. Finally, applications to psychology are provided.
