Analytic philosophy is a tradition within philosophy that is often presented contrastively with continental philosophy. The term is used in two different ways. On one usage, it refers to a sociological lineage of philosophers active in the twentieth century, in and around the United Kingdom, Austria, and the United States, reacting against idealism and its associated ways of doing philosophy. On a more contemporary usage, the phrase “analytic philosophy” is used to describe a style of doing philosophy, including a set of methodological norms, presentation styles, and collection of topics, that emphasize clear writing and logical argumentation.
