After presenting some basic notions on alphabets, words, languages, and operations on words and languages in Section 1.1, we restate Noam Chomsky’s phrase structure grammars and their restricted variants in Section 1.2. In particular, we present an extended version of the Chomsky hierarchy together with the well-known characterizations of the classes of this hierarchy by classical models of automata.
