After the introduction, this chapter provides the reader with an overview of the historical developments of the railway brake system, starting with the independent brake of early locomotives to computer controlled direct brake systems with blending. It presents the underlying regulations applied to the railway brake system. While it focuses on the international UIC system, further regulations are presented as well as the development of these regulations.
