The Yiddish playwright and impresario Moyshe Hurwitz (1844–1910) was among the central theatre makers of the Yiddish popular theatre scene. This chapter explores Hurwitz’s migration, his business initiatives, production activities, theatre writings and influence on the Yiddish popular theatre scene, in order to understand how his theatre created and navigated the formation of a migratory community. As this chapter shows, Hurwitz created performative models that fictionalized the theatre as a home for Jewish migrants and as a mode of participation in community-building processes.
