Competent psychologists provide valuable clinical services to people who have been injured and are involved in litigation or other legal processes, as well as forensic services to legal decision-makers. Such competence requires advanced preparation and maintenance of the relevant knowledge and skill base. A commitment to providing ethical services is a key component of effective practice at the intersection of psychological injury and law. A structured, systematic decision-making process facilitates identification of ethical issues, avoidance of ethical problems, and resolution of ethical dilemmas. Numerous resources exist to guide practitioners to sound ethical decisions. This chapter reviews the relevant ethical issues, decision-making processes, and key resources needed for effective psychological practice in contexts in which persons who have been injured are involved in legal matters.
