Standard of care in forensic evaluations is to include formal measures of symptom validity in order to determine the credibility of a respondent’s self-reported psychological symptoms and problems. Free-standing (sometimes referred to as “stand-alone”) symptom validity tests (SVTs) are self-report or interview-based measures designed for the purpose of assessing symptom validity, predominantly related to negative response bias. SVTs vary based on format, content of exaggerated symptoms (e.g., somatic versus psychological), and detection strategies used. The chapter authors review issues related to free-standing SVTs, especially around the topic of redundancy of SVTs in a battery, and provide a table of common SVTs and attributes. In addition, two specific free-standing SVTs, i.e., the Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology and the Inventory of Problems-29, are discussed in more detail. The chapter authors conclude that the use of free-standing SVTs is recommended, especially in conjunction with embedded scales of broad-band measures, and that the field could benefit from additional validation of currently available SVTs, as well as the development of new measures.
