There are many predecessors to the electronic computer, mostly in the form of mechanical calculators. The history is interesting because it shows the obvious demand for such devices whilst demonstrating a number of difficulties which were first overcome with the advent of digital electronics. Mechanical data input was usually complicated and output very limited. In many cases memory systems either didn’t exist or were rudimentary punched card or tape formats which restricted any calculation process to a sequence of pre-determined computations.
